Looking at the advantages and disadvantages of organic food helps in determining whether it makes a difference to be choosy about the foods we consume.

What makes food Organic?

In regards of the organic food, the general public always asks an important question. What makes food organic? Well, it is the manner in which it is grown, and in the case of animal products the manner in which, the animals are reared.

Organic farming restricts the use of synthetic chemicals that include pesticides, growth hormones, herbicides, fertilizers, and preservatives. This food grows naturally in a natural environment without genetic engineering.

What are the Benefits of Organic Food and its Advantages?

One of the biggest questions when it comes to organic versus conventional food is, what are the benefits of organic food? and, what are the advantages of it?

Organic food has various advantages, including:

a) It has positive health effects on humans as compared to conventional food. The fact that it is free from synthetic chemicals means that it poses a lower risk of health complications associated with these chemicals and additives. These complications range from cancer to allergies and obesity.

b) Another important advantage of organic food is it also has a lower risk of cadmium than conventionally grown food. Cadmium is a metal present in phosphate rock, which is used to make fertilizer.

Organic vegetables

Continuous use of fertilizer leads to the accumulation of cadmium and other metals in the soil and consequently, the plants take it up in large quantities, exposing humans to bioaccumulation. So, is organic food better for your? Well, when you go organic, you can keep yourself safe from cadmium and consequently, the health implications of having the metal accumulate in your body.
Organic food has been hailed as being tastier and more nutritious. The taste, smell, color, and generally, the quality of the food is better while the micronutrients present in the natural soil makes it more nutritious (you are likely to get a slightly higher amount of vitamins and protein from organic food).

Disadvantages of Organic food

Cost:

Organic food is not without some disadvantages. The safety of organic food comes at a higher cost. A complete organic diet that includes anything from milk to potatoes, fruits and vegetables will have you spending more on your food.

Preservation:

You also have to learn to plan better on how to buy your organic food because it does not last long. The absence of preservatives means that organic products will spoil faster.

Availability:

You are less likely to enjoy a wide variety of organic vegetables and fruits because no chemicals are used to accelerate growth. Unless you live close to an organic food market, you might need to travel some distance to find a place where to buy it.

On the other hand, organic fruits may not be available all year round because you have to wait to get them in season, unless you are willing to pay more for imported varieties.

Organic Vegetables and fruits

You may need to consider buying organic frozen food, where possible, to allow you to buy in bulk, which ends up being more cost effective.

Although, organic food may not guarantee perfect health, it goes a long way in contributing to a healthier life and longevity. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of organic food and make the decision of whether or not to get into the organic culture.
